DANGER, DANGER – What are the hidden dangers of highly processed foods?

Dangers of Highly Processed FoodsIn our fast-paced, modern world, convenience often takes precedence over nutrition. There are many hidden dangers of highly processed foods that the majority of people are unaware of. Highly processed foods have become a staple in many people’s diets, but the convenience they offer may come at a hidden cost to our health. In this article, we’ll delve into the numerous risks associated with consuming highly processed foods.

1. Poor Nutritional Value: Highly processed foods are typically stripped of essential nutrients during the refining and manufacturing process. They are often high in empty calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats, while lacking the vitamins, minerals, and fiber our bodies need for optimal health.

2. Excessive Sugar Content: Many processed foods are loaded with added sugars, which can lead to a variety of health issues, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. We are eating an extraordinary amount of sugar, much more than our bodies were designed for. The average American adult consumes an average of 17 teaspoons of ADDED sugar every day. This is 2-3 times more than the recommended amount (and that is even too high)! This adds up to SIXTY pounds of ADDED sugar consumed by each adult annually.

3. High Levels of Sodium: Processed foods are notorious for their high sodium content, which can contribute to hypertension and increase the risk of stroke and heart disease when consumed with excess carbohydrates. Salt on a keto diet needs to be higher, as the keto diet is a natural diuretic and our electrolytes need to be replenished daily.

4. Artificial Additives: Processed foods often contain a cocktail of artificial additives, such as preservatives, flavor enhancers, and colorants. Some of these additives have been linked to adverse health effects, including allergies, hyperactivity in children, and even cancer.

5. Obesity Epidemic: The rise in highly processed foods corresponds with the global obesity epidemic. A study published in the journal Obesity Reviews found that processed foods are a major contributor to weight gain, as they are typically calorie-dense but not very filling, leading to overconsumption.

6. Impact on Mental Health: Emerging research suggests a connection between highly processed diets and poor mental health. A study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics found that a diet high in processed foods is associated with an increased risk of depression in adolescents.

7. Reduced Satiety: Highly processed foods are designed to be hyper-palatable, which means they are engineered to be irresistibly tasty. However, this can lead to overeating and a cycle of unhealthy food consumption.

8. Limited Nutritional Education: Many individuals are unaware of the nutritional content of the processed foods they consume. Food labeling can be confusing, and the lack of education about proper nutrition can result in poor dietary choices.

So, what can you do to protect yourself from the dangers of processed foods?

It starts with being mindful of your food choices. Aim to prioritize whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Read food labels to identify added sugars, excessive sodium, and artificial additives. Educate yourself about nutrition and seek out healthier alternatives to processed snacks and meals.

This does not mean you can never indulge in a convenient processed food. Our bodies were designed to filter out toxic elements that we take in, but it’s the AMOUNT of toxicity that makes or breaks our bodies. Shoot for 80-90% whole foods and 10-20% processed, convenience, or fast foods.
