What Are Poppy Seeds?
Poppy Seeds are tiny black seeds from the poppy plant.
Keto Status?
Acceptable
Why?
Natural and low carb (2.4 net carbs per 3.5 oz serving). They are also full of nutrients, antioxidants, and have health benefits including:
- May contain pain-relieving compounds
- May boost heart and skin health
- May aid digestion
- May safeguard against certain illnesses
- May enhance fertility
Possible Side Effects From Ingesting Poppy Seeds?
Unwashed poppy seeds, poppy seed teas, and poppy-containing products marketed as natural pain relievers or sleep aids may contain doses of opioids sufficient to cause addiction, overdose, and even death. Eating these seeds may result in a positive drug test. For instance, small amounts of codeine and morphine may remain detectable in urine for up to 48 hours after poppy seeds are consumed. The exact amount needed to result in a positive drug test depends on the thresholds used by the testing lab, as well as the concentration of opium remaining after the seeds have been washed. Generally speaking, the more poppy seeds you eat, the higher your likelihood of testing positive for opium compounds.

I Heart Keto Mart Rating Guide
I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients through a “keto diet” & “low carb diet” lens. As an example, peas would be rated as “Acceptable” on a non-keto healthy diet; however, due to their carbohydrate level, we rate them “Objectionable”. We also rate all sweeteners that typically cause a rise in blood sugar and insulin levels as “Objectionable”. If you prefer a natural sweetener, like honey, over a sugar alcohol like erythritol, you may not agree with our “Objectionable” rating. I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients based first and foremost for those that have a sugar/carbohydrate addiction. Ingredients are rated for those who must moderate if not completely abstain from any sugars. If you have questions about this, please refer to this article: Why Some Whole Foods Are Not Keto Friendly
