What is Neotame?
Neotame is one of the newest artificial sweeteners, a derivative of aspartame. Neotame is 7000 to 13,000 times sweeter than sugar and has no calories.
Keto Status?
Objectionable
Why?
Neotame remains fairly controversial. Neotame is chemically similar to aspartame, which is widely regarded as the most dangerous artificial sweetener. Both neotame and aspartame convert to formaldehyde when metabolized. However, the effects of neotame may be even worse because it includes 3-dimethylbutyl—one of the world’s most hazardous chemicals, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When combined with formaldehyde, 3-dimethylbutyl can cause serious damage to the brain and other bodily tissues. It’s still unknown how much neotame must be consumed for this to occur—but the fact that it’s possible should be enough for you to want to steer clear of it.
Possible Side Effects From Ingesting Neotame?

I Heart Keto Mart Rating Guide
I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients through a “keto diet” & “low carb diet” lens. As an example, peas would be rated as “Acceptable” on a non-keto healthy diet; however, due to their carbohydrate level, we rate them “Objectionable”. We also rate all sweeteners that typically cause a rise in blood sugar and insulin levels as “Objectionable”. If you prefer a natural sweetener, like honey, over a sugar alcohol like erythritol, you may not agree with our “Objectionable” rating. I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients based first and foremost for those that have a sugar/carbohydrate addiction. Ingredients are rated for those who must moderate if not completely abstain from any sugars. If you have questions about this, please refer to this article: Why Some Whole Foods Are Not Keto Friendly
