Cellulose Gel / Cellulose Gum

Questionable Keto Ingredient

What is Cellulose Gum?

Cellulose Gum, also called Cellulose Gel, is a stabilizing agent used in many foods, supplements, and pharmaceuticals. It is generally made out of wood fibers and other non-food fibrous plant matter. It is used as a thickening agent in many food products.

Keto Status?

Debatable

Why?

Due to the possible side effects listed below. It has no nutritional value and has zero carbs.

Possible Side Effects From Ingesting Cellulose Gum?

A 2021 study found that long-term consumption of cellulose gum can alter levels of beneficial bacteria and nutrients in the gut. This supports previous animal study findings that suggest prolonged consumption of cellulose gum may promote chronic inflammatory conditions, including colitis, metabolic syndrome, and colon cancer.

*While this data should certainly be taken under consideration, it’s important to note that participants in the experimental group were consuming 15 grams of cellulose gum per day, which is more than the average individual would typically consume on a daily basis.  Further research is required to understand more about the impact that cellulose gum can have on humans.

I Heart Keto Mart Rating Guide

I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients through a “keto diet” & “low carb diet” lens. As an example, peas would be rated as “Acceptable” on a non-keto healthy diet; however, due to their carbohydrate level, we rate them “Objectionable”. We also rate all sweeteners that typically cause a rise in blood sugar and insulin levels as “Objectionable”. If you prefer a natural sweetener, like honey, over a sugar alcohol like erythritol, you may not agree with our “Objectionable” rating. I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients based first and foremost for those that have a sugar/carbohydrate addiction. Ingredients are rated for those who must moderate if not completely abstain from any sugars.
