Calcium Citrate

Acceptable Keto Ingredient

What is Calcium Citrate?

Calcium Citrate is a form of calcium supplement that is easily absorbed by the body, making it an excellent choice for those looking to maintain bone health, and a bone strength supplement. It is commonly used as a food additive usually as a preservative, but sometimes for flavor.

Keto Status?

Acceptable

Why?

It is a mineral associated with healthy bones and teeth. It also plays a role in blood clotting, helping muscles to contract and regulating normal heart rhythms and nerve functions.

Possible Side Effects From Ingesting Calcium Citrate?

Too much calcium in the blood is called hypercalcemia. The Upper Limit (UL) for calcium is 2,500 mg daily from food and supplements. People over the age of 50 should not take more than 2,000 mg daily, especially from supplements, as this can increase the risk of some conditions like kidney stones, prostate cancer, and constipation. Some research has shown that in certain people, calcium can accumulate in blood vessels with long-term high doses and cause heart problems. Calcium is also a large mineral that can block the absorption of other minerals like iron and zinc.

Symptoms of hypercalcemia:

  • Weakness, fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations, irregular heart rate

I Heart Keto Mart Rating Guide

I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients through a “keto diet” & “low carb diet” lens. As an example, peas would be rated as “Acceptable” on a non-keto healthy diet; however, due to their carbohydrate level, we rate them “Objectionable”. We also rate all sweeteners that typically cause a rise in blood sugar and insulin levels as “Objectionable”. If you prefer a natural sweetener, like honey, over a sugar alcohol like erythritol, you may not agree with our “Objectionable” rating. I Heart Keto Mart rates all ingredients based first and foremost for those that have a sugar/carbohydrate addiction. Ingredients are rated for those who must moderate if not completely abstain from any sugars.
